The historic sailing ship ‘Beijing’ will be restored at the Peters yard in Wewelsfleth. The Hamburg Maritime Foundation has awarded Peters yard the tender for this.
A restoration period of two to three years is expected. The hull of the more than 100 meters long ship has to be largely recreated in an original way. The federal government has allocated 26 million euros for the renovation. The ‘Beijing’ will be given a central place in the German museum ports.
Built in 1911 by Blohm & Vos, the freighter sailing ship belonged to the legendary ‘Flying P-Line’ of shipping company Laeisz, and has sailed around Cape Horn 34 times for this shipping company. Since 1932 she has been a stationary school ship and boarding school in Medway on the English East Coast. In 1975 the ship was sold to New York. Here she lay for decades in the South Street Museum.
